What do you think is a typical day for someone who is 15-19 years old? Do you think students’ answers are different in each country? The American Time Use Survey (ATUS) is a study by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. They interviewed American high-school students about their average day.
The ATUS shows that a typical day for American students includes around 8 hours of sleep, 7.5 hours of school, 4 hours of sports or leisure activities, and 4.5 hours of other activities (including travel, activities in the house, and eating). All students spend around two hours a day of their leisure time watching TV. But that’s where the similarities end; the amount of time spent on leisure and other activities is different between male and female students.
In an average day, female students spend around one hour socializing, around 30 minutes using a computer or playing video games, and under 30 minutes doing sports. However, male students spend around one hour playing video games and one hour doing sports.
Results from the ATUS also show that driving, part-time work, and doing volunteer work are part of the typical day for some American high-school students.
