Antarctica is colder, drier, and windier than any of the other continents. 98% of the land is ice. Winter starts in June and ends in September, but it's dark and cold for up

to seven months of the year. Temperatures drop to -40°C, and the wind speed reaches more than 140 kilometers per hour. This makes it too cold for many animals to stay there during the winter months.

Emperor penguins stay in Antarctica all year round. They are larger than other penguins and are very intelligent. In winter, they spend long periods of time standing in a big circle. This protects them from the cold and wind. The emperor penguins work as a team. They take turns standing on the inside of the circle (where it’s warmer), and then on the outside. They never get too cold, even in extreme weather conditions.
